Physical literacy in adolescents: A comprehensive review

Abstract:

Physical activity is defined as "Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure" by the World Health Organisation [5]. A physically literate person is someone who is driven, competent, and self-assured and who will engage in physical activity (PA) all of their life. Adolescents as defined by the United Nations as those between the ages of 10 and 19. Adolescents experience intense physical, psychological, emotional and economic changes as they make the transition from childhood to adulthood [13]. Adolescents must be physically literate in order to lead active and healthy lifestyles. Additionally, increasing physical literacy has a good impact on preventing disorders like obesity and diabetes that arise due to lack of physical activity. Around the world, physical literacy is becoming more and more popular in sports, physical education, and physical exercise. Nonetheless, the idea of physical literacy has received greater attention, and its evaluation is still in its infancy. School physical education and youth sports programs now emphasise on physical literacy. Physical literacy is still a difficult concept to define and evaluate in India despite the increased attention from around the world. The main aim of this paper is to simplify useful information regarding the physical literacy concept specifically which is sometimes misunderstood and misinterpreted in the field of Physical education and sports in India. A comprehensive exploration was carried out utilizing, Academia and google scholar for publications released no later than November 2024, following the principles of the preferred reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).
