Tribal, identity, cross-cultural encounter: A critique through the lens of tribal mind

Author(s):

Batskhem Mawlein

Abstract:

The study seeks to critically examine the term tribe; and its associated negative connotations, particularly as they impact the people in the northeastern regions of the country when interacting with those outside the tribal communities. It further investigates the concept of their profound connection to the land. Additionally, the discussion will address the crisis of tribal identity, which is contested by various presuppositions that differ from general interpretations of identity. The research also aims to elucidate the proposals extended to tribal communities during the colonial period and post-independence India. Finally, the study explores the interactions between self and others, to foster a situation where mutual understanding among people is achieved.
