Biocentrism and Khasi identity: An ecocritical reading of Soso Tham’s poetry

Author(s):

Bertina Lyngdoh

Abstract:

Nature-Human relationships have taken an indigenous turn in recent times. The non-anthropocentric belief systems and cultures of indigenous people are looking to be a better approach to dealing with problems such as climate change. Such are the Khasi from the state of Meghalaya, whose relationship with nature is one of respect and co-dependence. Soso Tham, considered the father of modern Khasi Literature, relies heavily on tradition and culture for his writings and often provides insight into the symbiotic relationship between the Khasi and nature. An ecocritical study of his poems reveal a counter opinion to western anthropocentric approaches and a remedy to current ecological concerns.
